Some time ago, I bought an online class with Emily Powell: Apples on a Plate. It is the artist's equivalent of a 1000-meter sprint: 20 sketches per hour. There is no time for thinking, no time for hesitation, no time to exhale. I love it!
I am a big fan of artistic warm-up exercises, where you draw with a non-dominant hand, without looking, and while standing on your head in less than 20 seconds. I am kidding, but only a little bit. When you want to loosen up, this is the way to go!
A class by Laura McKendry on Domestika (Illustrating Nature: A Creative Exploration) beautifully showcases a range of warm-up exercises. It is my all-time favorite online class. I have been returning to it in different stages of my art practice, and I always discover something new.
Here are some of my sketches from the class with Emily Powell.
Materials:
Derwent Inktense watercolors
Clairefontaine Trophee tinted ivory A4 printer paper 160g
Water soluble colored pencils
Neocolors 2
Small Holbein Hake brush
These are beautiful!
Laura McKendry is one of my favourite people to learn with. Maybe I'll need to check out Emily's apples now!
